I have just yesterday had a Virgin Media V+ Box installed and was wondering on a couple of points that tthe tech guy could not answer.

1. There is an eSata port at the back - can this be used yet?

2. There is an RJ45 connection - can this be wired to my router asn if so will the internal Hard DRive on the V+ Box show up in my Network?

3. Assuming 2 above is possible can I delete / add files to the HardDrive

4. What format does the V+ Box record in.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but was really wondering mainly aobut the Netowrk Connection question (2 + 3)

Cheers

1: It's disabled
2: It's disabled, iirc it's to allow it to work with very specific devices (proprietary secondary boxes).
3: no
4: iirc it's some proprietary/encrypted format.

The V+ box is a standard model made by Scientic Atlanta in the U.S. I believe, and has connections to allow different cable operators to enable/disable certain functions depending on the packages and options they sell (cable operators can disable/enable features in their customised firmware).

I believe the ethernet is because one of the options available from some U.S. operators is a remote box that connects to the main one via it, to let you easily watch it in another room (without having a second proper box).

There is an ethernet port on the rear as you can connect a router and have your internet access via the box, this however can only be done if you dont already have broadband installed...........This i know because a while ago i was looking to get a wireless router so we could use the laptop, i noticed on "telewests" website (as it was then) a wireless router package, you simply connected it to the set top box - ideal i thought, when i enquired i was told i couldnt do this as i was already a broadband user.
