Adding fields to the registration page for a Wordpress site

Has anyone had any experience of this and can assist in the process please? I've seen a few plugins around but they are ultimately just single php files with all the apparent components, but when enabled they don't do anything.

The ultimate goal is to have a couple of extra text input fields as part of the registration.

I found this one last night but for some reason when I've installed the plugin and and attempted to update the registration page it doesn't seem to have any effect. I assume there isn't anything that I need to do that isn't within the plugin setting pages?
