Adding more RAM question

it really depends on your motherboard, 80% of the time it will be fine.

just make sure you have the exact same ram speed, brand, timmings, and voltage.

and when you install the new set give the system a CMOS reset to make sure it detects the new ram and defaults the settings.

have any trouble you know where to ask for some advice ;)

Well the mobo is a XFX S775 nForce 680i SLI
Ive not clocked or altered any of the current timmings / voltages and the ram is exactly the same product code,
its just from the reviewers comments i got the impression there had been some sort of update to the model

"If you have exsisting Dominator memory mixing the revisions with new stuff can lead to BSOD also Corsair say they dont recommend mixing revisions of memory"

The 680i boards are notoriously carp when it comes to 4 sticks of RAM. Most of the issues come with it killing any overclock you have on, but you need to make small adjustments here and there even to boot with 4 sticks in (extra NB voltage mainly). Personally, I would either leave it alone or sell what you have and buy 2 sticks of 2 x 2Gb instead.

The revisions thing can be small changes like just changing the chip manufacturer to big things like changing the PCB and chip manfacturer. Matched sets of RAM are matched at production for a reason. They can be highly finicky, especially on performance motherboards like your 680i.

Ahh i see, right so lets assume i sold my current 2gb
what do you think is best out of these two.

or
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...HPC Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2RPR10664GK)
which my m8 has and recommends.
corsair is £10 more but has a cooler fan included and both almost identical specs,
so is it just personal preference or is there some hidden goodies in one or other :D

i have a 680i chipset board and found difficulties with running 4 slots full

so i just ended up opting for 2 x 2gig which works great.

go for the corsair if they work fine on your board just now mate :p

I had the same issues mate, went through kingston, and geil b4 corsair, now I can run all 4 slots with 2gb in each... It would seem some boards can be very fussy about thier memory when you fully populate...
