I have read up on this question elsewhere, but as I have a tendency to over think and over engineer every little project I am asking here too :)

I want to add a power socket into the loft to run a switch. To do this off a nearby socket would require trunking or chasing the wall out which I would rather avoid if I can. The boiler sits in the old airing cupboard on the first floor and would provide a neat route up to the loft.

Can I take a spur off the rear of the fused switched spur that feeds the boiler inside the airing cupboard? The boiler is fed by what would have been the old immersion feed, and has its own dedicated breaker In the consumer unit rated at 16a which I have tested. I.e I switched it off and only the boiler lost power.

If this is viable, do I need to add any further protection loft side or can I just add a socket in and away to go?

That sounds fine for a single socket, assuming your boiler is gas and not an electric boiler. Gas boilers are usually fused down to 3A.

Use 2.5mm twin and earth cable.

You don't need any additional protection on the loft side for a socket. You might want to fit an isolating switch in the airing cupboard for convenience though - saves getting up in the loft if the switch needs a reboot etc.

Thanks for that - it is indeed a gas combi. Great idea on the isolating switch, would certainly save a lot of unnecessary faffing to power down the switch. With regards to the isolating switch, what should I be looking to buy? Presumably an FCU is not required, is there an unfused variant.
