So I have:

Asus M3A78-T AM2+ Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ AM2+ CPU Unlocked to a Quad Core Phonom II X4
4GB DDR2 Ram (two sticks of 2GB)
Corsair TX650 PSU
Gainward Rampage700 HD4870 X2 2048MB GS GLH

My (even)old(er!) PC is running a XP3200 and some other gubbins that I can't remember...

I think the RAM is 2 x 1GB Corsair XMS2700 (could that be right?? Might even be 2 x 512MB. It's been so long...)

Could I add those two old sticks of RAM into the newer PC? Is it possible? Pointless? Pathetic? Pallatable? Penguin?

Sorry that's a stupid question, but I'm so out of touch with these things...

I've drifted away from computers but im sure the xms2700 will be DDR and will not fit on your DD2 Motherboard

Hmm, pretty much what I thought.

How can I tell if my old RAM is DDR or DDR2? Is there an obvious noticeable (physical) difference?

When did DDR2 come out? (just trying to guage what it is by age)

DDR RAM is 184 pins. DDR2 is 240 pins and longer. Best way to tell is to look up your computer model or motherboard model number and do a search for the specs on the net.

As far as i know DDR2 came out in 2003.
