Elsewhere in wiki, it says that the term comes from the French for sellers of fizzy lemon drink, Limonadiers. Seems logical then that the 'lemon' bit is removed and replaced by whichever fruit is involved.

Well, real lemonade is just lemon juice and sugar with some water. Only in the UK do people think it is some clear carbonated urine tasting product.
