I have a separate admin account on my sons PC that I very rarely log into.
Yesterday after running a few virus scans (Avast, superantispyware and malwarebytes) I logged in to find a desktop that doesn't work properly.
There is no wallpaper and some shortcuts don't work - Google Chrome gives an error message of cannot read or write to the correct data file (something like that).
The search box within the start menu didn't work also.
I got ETcall error message also and a warning of open driver / failure.
I clicked repair in programme manager - not sure if it worked or not but haven't had that message since.
Tried reboot a few times to no avail.
Run combofix and when completed everything seemed to work again.
Restarted PC and admin account back to not working again.
Realised defender was on so disabled it and restarted - still not working.
Ran combofix again and like before, upon completion the desktop worked fine again until reboot then not working again.
BTW the user account was working fine throughout all of this.
So...accessed_
Start > Computer > C: > Users > name, and set share permissions to homegroup (read) .
It seemed to work after this but will test again later as it was 23:30.
Sorry for the long post - just hope someone will offer some advice.
