i have forgotten my administrator password on my laptop and am unable to change it to a new one therefore. i can access the hard drive and get to the desktop but when i go to user accounts under control panel i cant remember the old one. i am running vista. how can i reset or recover this password? thanks

The only utils I've seen for this were, how can I put it, less than legal. You might have luck by googling for something...

On a wider note, I always create on every machine a second admin account called Maintenance with a password that's the same for all.

Give this a try: http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/

There are a number of different things you can try. There are thousands of third party programs on the net. If you have another admin account you can reset the other one, or worst case scenario you could do a repair install (I think?)

But yeah, there are hundreds of methods depending on the situation with users on the PC. I'm sure plenty of other posters will have other methods, or...google it!

I know some tech guys that use a piece of software and install some software on a usb stick make it boot using the usb stick at it can retrieve the admin password

I've heard of people doing it by using a Linux Live CD such as Knoppix but never done it myself so not sure the exact steps.

Quick search come up with many results of using Linux Live distro and this small program working for both XP and Vista.

Good luck with it.
