Adobe Premiere pro CC freeze issues

Been trying to debug some issues that a friend is experiencing with Premiere pro CC on a laptop, but the obvious fixes do not appear to be working for them.

Basically the program (often) freezes and refuses to respond when they try to open up a movie project.

They've tried full uninstall and reinstalls of the program, and dragging projects into the program manually, and the license is up to date.

What is curious is that it worked at one point, but they can't pinpoint exactly when it started to misbehave.

Defragmentation is scheduled to occur once a week automatically.

I'm curious if the ram in the laptop has gone bad or something. I'm told it's packing 32gb of the stuff (which seems tremendously high for a laptop), but I thought I'd try and bounce this issue off some people who may be more experienced with Adobe products than myself. It's vague stuff, but it's bothering me.

If you can reproduce the problem off pat, can get some stack traces when it is occurring with process explorer (or other), and also use process monitor to find out whether it is doing io on particular files as problem happens (should see the movie project files being opened etc) .. maybe that will give a clue
(can go nuclear with a proper debugger too, but personally more familiar with those in linux domain)

I had a similar problem with Premiere CS5, turned out to be due to a plug-in I had installed.
Uninstalling it fixed the issue. IIRC it was one of the free filmpact plug-ins, possibly the transition pack demo

Uninstalled it and voila, no more crashes/lock-ups when opening projects
