Adobe Reader Problems

I have a problem , I have downloaded the free version of adobe reader but I cannot read any pdf files they will not open ? Any idea's ? why

does windows associate .pdf files with adobe reader?
do you get any errors?

Foxit Reader is good

Sumatra is worth a mention. Great little PDF viewer.
