Has anyone got an useful stratergies with regards to adsense blocks and types?

I'm using them with a wordpress blog and including them on pages as well as in the side banners.

Do text ads do better than image ones? I'd appreciate your feedback guys.

Yes text ones do better for me - it depends on the site though. E.g. a TV website, image adverts work quite well when they show movies or television shows.

If you have a "niche" site/blog then you're going to get very relevant adverts which are probably best being text adverts - and to get the best out of them, make them look almost like part of the websites navigation - or like part of the articles content.

They're all in the right places really. The "Southsea Piers" ad block is a turn off though, I would just go for a banner-sized text one.

On the left, I wouldn't title it "Ads" (it already says Ads by Google, anyway). I would try harder to make it look like part of the navigation menu - same background colour and font colours.

Look - this looks a lot better and makes the ads look much more appealing to click on (although can still be improved, just a quick demo of what I mean):

I'd probably put a banner image at the top of the center column, actually. I think an image ad could work well there, in some sort of container.

Have changed the southsea pier post to a single banner and the link title as you suggested.

Am having trouble seting the colours though as I have created the new add unit with white as the colour for text, links and URL but it still shows in what appears to a template colour scheme, is something overriding it?
