Adsense - privacy question and general thoughts?

Hi guys

My missus has a blog which is beginning to gain in popularity and she is thinking of putting some ads on there to hopefully bring in the pennies.

She only wants to do it though if it stays completely private. Is there anyway for people clicking on the ads to see where the revenue is going, or is it completely hidden away by Google?

Also, she would like any hints anyone can offer about adsense, neither of us have used it before so we are rather green, so far we have gathered...

  • Don't put too many ads on a page.
  • Don't have any dodgy material on the page
  • Don't have any other paid for links on the page
  • Google don't pay out until you have reached $100 worth of moolah.
  • Whatever you do, don't click on your own ads
  • Don't have any anti-religious comments (from a comment we read on a forum)

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

If I remember rightly you can have 3 ad adsense units, any more is against their temrs
No problem with other paid ads
It's £60 the threshold on the UK priced adsense
Try different types of ads to see what performs best. Sometimes it's images, sky scrapers or smaller blocks.
Nobody can see the revenue you've generated.

What are is the blog in? Is it just a general purpose one?

Thanks very much for the reply :)

Are those units the limit for one page? So for example, you could have a horizontal at the top, one skyscraper one down the side, and another horizontal block at the bottom?

And that could be repeated throughout each subpage?

Cheers for the price correction, I think that works out a bit cheaper in general :)

Do Google do image based ads? I thought it was always just those blocks that say "ads by Google"...?

No, the blog is on a specific theme, she doesn't want me to say what though, I think she (rightly), fears the OCUK detective agency lol.

No worries, yes for any page. This one of my sites that serves up adsense ads www.the-pier.co.uk You'll see I've got sky scraper, horizontal and some "links" ones.

Yes the do do image ads but obviously only if there are ads for the content you have! You can set it to display text only, image only or a mix on each ad unit.

No problem about the disclosing the theme of the blog. A themed blog though will mean that you should get a good set of ads that match the content!

Thanks again for your speedy reply, that's fantastic! :D

Sounds good, should be exciting to have a go at!

Do you think it's ever worth setting up blogs / sites just to try and harvest an income through ad revenue?

On one hand it sounds like a 24/7 way of making small amounts of cash but it's also an investment in domains and hosting etc., if 99% of them fail.

Ooh, she has asked me to clarify, with regards to the privacy aspects, that's good that no-one can see how much you make, but can they see who you are. For example are links embedded with your name or anything (I have no idea what I'm talking about), I just mean are you personally identifiable by linking your Google adsense account to a blog/website?

Thanks again :)

No problem, am signing off now but I'm sure someone else will comment if you've got more questions!

It's difficult to make good money from ad revenue alone and there are better ways to make money online so if you've got lots of time and patience I could recommend other avenues to pursue!

Adsense ads contain no tracking info back to you so no worries there. You'll need to include a privacy policy on the site serving up adsense ads as visitors can opt out of them. All of this info is available when you sign up.

To be honest it costs nothing to setup adsense so just give it a go. It generally takes between 10 - 30 mins (sometimes even longer) for a newly created adsense unit to serve ads so don't panic if nothing displays the first time you refresh a page after you've inserted the adsense code!

Hmmm...time? Well we are lacking a bit in that department, we do have patience though, and we work together so we could put a bit into it between us.

I would love to hear your suggestions about other avenues to pursue! Times are a bit lean at the moment (aren't they with everyone?) so any and all options are greatly appreciated!

That all sounds great, I'll give her the green light to go ahead with it and see what happens!

As I say though, we are both all ears for any suggestions you have about how to better utilise the internet :)

Many thanks again for your speedy and superbly helpful posts! :D

I setup a small verticla adsense unit on my blog (see sig link). Tried it with a small hozintal ad at the top and bottom of an article and then a vertical one in the footer, but that looked really spammy - so I stuck with the one vertical one one right.

Added the single adsense unit to my blog about 2.5 - 3 months ago roughly and am up to £54 - not bad imo as it just sits there doing nothing :) Have also noticed as soon as you sign for up adsense you get bombared with adwords vouchers from Google - E.g. recieved a £75.00 voucher last week and still have a £25 one to use before the end of feb :)

If you're serious about making money I'd go for Adwords - as that tends to drive targetted customers to your website for a small fee

Have sent you an e-mail to your trust. If you don't get it then e-mail my trust and I will reply!

Thanks for the post :)

That sounds pretty good, that's a nice extra amount every quarter to have, certainly covers the cost of hosting!

Does Google allow you to use more than one voucher then? I've had them drop out of PC magazines before now, I used a £50 one once, but all the extra ones I have had have been for 'new accounts only' :(

Are they different vouchers or are you able to use them anyway?

I'm not too clear on your last point. You mention using adwords to drive traffic to the site, but that defeats the point of adsense doesn't it as any money you make from clicks you lose from adwords.

Did you mean driving traffic to a site where you are selling something or am I missing a trick?

My missus site which we were considering adsense on is just a blog so it doesn't generate it's own income in any way at the moment.

wonder_lander, still hoping to hear from yourself about other revenue streams, I'm really interested in your thoughts on that :)

Many thanks to both of you for your posts so far :D

Well done with the earnings, that's not too bad at all. The key thing is if you have a target blog then the ads served up should be nice and useful to your visitors. How many UV's do you get a month to your blog?

IMHO it's not a good idea to use adwords to provide traffic to click on adsense ads! It's fine if you've got a target site selling something but brining people to a site in the hope they will click an ad seems like it will have a very low chance of happening!

Hi wonder_lander, thanks for the reply, we must have been typing at the same time lol.

Would you mind sending me the email again please, the email address in my profile doesn't exist anymore, it's an old AOL one...I completely forgot what I signed up with, I've never used it since!

Sent again, if you don't get it this time try my trust e-mail!

I've sent you a message through trust, hope it comes through OK.

I feel like I've just had my eyes opened to this forum...I've been a member for over four years and I had no idea all the trust stuff existed

I think I've been selectively blind to the button all this time!
