Right, problem.

My mate has a laptop which he wants to connect to the net wirelessly.

It is with Tiscali (Don't laugh). He has bought a Belkin Wirless ADSL Router and a Belkin Wireless adapter card for his Laptop.

How does he setup the Router as he has no Ethernet connection on his PC so he cannot connect the router to the laptop. He has installed the wireless adapter card but he cannot get online. All the lights on the router are on as they are supposed to be. How does he set it all up? He has typed in a 192.168....number but he cannot get on the net. Please help if you can. Does he need to have the Router connected to a PC first to set it up? (No ethernet on his laptop)

Thanks if you can help at all.

Best I can suggest is to make sure his notebook is set to obtain an IP address automatically then see if it does get an address if the router is powered up before the notebook.

If it does then he is good to go and should be able to follow the instructions that came with his router to get it set up properly with his ISP login details.

Anyone else able to help with more detailed advice? Thanks
What Teal said really. Unless no manual/QSG/etc (helps also to give model names & or numbers) or you don't know how to 'make sure his notebook is set to obtain an IP address automatically'?

All wireless routers come 'Ready-2-Go'. So unless faulty then the laptop/wireless adapter should pick it up :cool:

We talking about Windows XP i take it?

If so, does the 'found new wireless networks' bubble appear down the bottom right hand corner beside the clock?

Can he 'see' the router on the available networks panel?

Did he install all the bloaty crappy software that comes with the belkin cards?

1. No

2. No

2. Yes

Is it true that it can't be done unless the Laptop is connected to the Router with an ethernet cable? There is no ethernet connection on the laptop!

Also, How do i do that:

'make sure his notebook is set to obtain an IP address automatically'?

Hope he followed instructions for installing the adapter/card carefully. Once, when installing a mates did not follow that & caused all-sorts of problems (think it was also Belkin).

Regarding IP address:
  1. Go to 'Control Panel';
  2. Then click on 'Network and Internet Connections';
  3. Click on 'Network Connections';
  4. The Wireless connection should appear if not then drivers/etc not installed properly (also, some PCMCIA cards require to pushed in properly);
  5. If above appears, right click on it then select 'Properties';
  6. A window will pop up, click on 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' then on 'Properties' button;
  7. This will bring up a new window & under 'General' tab everything should be set to 'Obtain Automatically'. If not change to that. Might require a restart of the system.
Also, is the router new or used/second-hand/etc? If latter, then might require a factory reset. For that seek manual (or here) :cool:
