ADSL Help ....

Hi There

After a bit of help with ADSL as in the past i have allways used cable.

It appears that my dad has a BT Voyager 220V ADSL Router which he took from his old house and has recentley payed for a ADSL connection with BT. There are 2 problems with it

1. The internet dosent allways work, saying there isnt a strong enough signal ?

2. If the PC is moved say away from the ADSL source ( say in another room ) the net wont work at all therefor it has to be sat right next to the socket ...

Apprentley after speaking to BT they have said that because he lives in the "sticks" the signal isnt that great and that he will have to put up with it ? Surley either BT are fobbing him off OR there is something you can buy to boost the signal ?

I have bought home a Draytek Vigor2600VG ADSL + Voip Router/54 Mbps Wlan but all the above problems seem to still be the same

Some help is much needed and will be much appreciated

It's possible BT are fobbing him off, but if they aren't, there's not much you can do (besides moving or getting cable).
Attenuation, SNR margin and current sync rate would be useful.

just to clarify, where are seeing the error for number 1
in 2 does the router remain next to the socket
almost sounds like your talking about wifi
 
I think the original post is too confusing to say for sure.
Sam, please give us some clear, concise details to work with.
 
My dad also lives in the sticks, and used to be with BT Broadband. Before BTMax he had a solid 1mb line, then they rolled out BTMax and he was lucky to get 400k, connection would drop every now and then, very poor performance.

He spoke to BT on several times, and gave him the same story, the town was using old cabling, was down to his location etc etc, nothing to do with us.

Anyway, I eventually got him to get the MAC code and switched him to a company I used when I had ADSL (IDNet), he now has a solid 1.5mb connection which doesn't drop.

Sure the lines may be bad and he lives a fair distance from the exchange, but funny how you move away from BT and suddenly gets better!!

I'd never go with BT.
 
Post some line stats from the Draytek.
What sort of connect is he renting Adsl Max or restricted to 1 or 2 m - which indeed may be the way to go
The best adsl modem for a poor line is the Speedtouch 780WL using a Broadcom chipset this beats most anything else and that definately includes any sort of Draytek.
Counld be poor internal wiring and filtering - which is down to him not BT and he can address
As prevously mentioned idnet is excellent offering a very immediate and personal service.- keep away from BT - they have wonderful Indian call centers for them of us who find having an apoplectic fit a health plus!!

Thank you for all the help and sorry for the confusing post

Firstley im talking about the ADSL connection and not the WIFI ( alltho WIFI needs to be used )

Im a real router newbie so if someone can explain how i can get those stats from the router that would be great and when i get home ill find them and post them up.

Oh and by the way when i say the connection is bad i meen its AWFULLY slow and sometimes theres simply no connection at all
