Hi all every one that has been upgraded to max adsl, could you please post what your attenuation and SNR was before and after you got MAX, also what speed you are syncing at and how fast your downloads are, also if you could also say what speed the BT checker says you could get (www.bt.com/broadband) compared with what you actually got. Thx.

Before:
Attenuation - 52dB
SNR - 25dB
Sync rate - 2272/288

After:
Attenuation - 52dB
SNR - 5dB (currently, it fluctuates a bit)
Sync rate - 6784/488 (I'm still in the 'training' period so it varies)

I just did a test from http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test/ and got a stable 672Kbyte/sec. Can't be bothered to do the BT speedtest, too much hassle.

i only had a crappy usb modem before my upgrade so i have no "before" stats. but here are my current stats.....

Code:
Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 8128 Kbps 448 Kbps
Noise Margin 13.7 dB 23.0 dB
Line Attenuation 15.0 dB 7.0 dB

throughput is still limited to 2mb speeds :(. the checker says i should get 6.5mb. :)

Before

Noise margin 30.5
Attenuation 27

After
Noise margin 8
Attenuation 27

Synced at 8128

I wouldn't put too much faith in the BT predictor, that said i'd only get 4.5mb.

Best way to work out your likely sync on max is to put your SNR and attenuation readings into the calculator that is in the sticky

Before:

2272/288

Downstream Attn: 55.6dB
Upstream Attn: 28dB

Downstream SNR: 16dB
Upstream SNR: 28dB

After:

~4500 - 4800/448

Downstream Attn: 53.6dB
Upstream Attn: 28dB

Downstream SNR: 4-6dB
Upstream SNR: 24dB

Only had it since this morning, had 4536kbps and 4800kbps so far, trying to avoid resetting the router so it doesn't turn on interleaving or knock the speed down :)

BT Checker said I'd get 3mbps and the DSLZone checker said 4.1mbps so I'm quite happy with how it's turned out

Hi

Before

Down att 26
Down SNR 26 daytime , dropping to 16 evenings ( not sure if router issue or other)

standard 2mb connection

Since 10/4 on Max

Down att 26
Down SNR changes between 9 & 6 mostly , 3 resync that ive spotted

Sync rate currently 7343 / 488 ... lowest seen 7124
Giganews speed test averages 5676

Checker indicted between 4 & 6.5 for my line

Before
Connection Speed 2272 kbps / 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 25 db / 6.5 db
Noise Margin 26 db / 30 db

After
Connection Speed 8128 kbps / 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 26 db / 6.5 db
Noise Margin 11 db* / 26 db

*changes to 6 when downloading also.

Pings are the same but due to the quicker upload it does run smoother..

My big problem is that it says connected at 7168 (7Mb?) and yet my download speeds are constantly still around 200kb/s, from any speed tester / download site that I do. Also, the stats below indicate some errors. What's up with this?

Before:

Connected at 2272Kbps DS. Can't remember upstream.
DS: SNR:31.0db
US: SNR:25.0db

After:
DS, then US

Noise Margin: 11.0 dB 13.0 dB
Output Power: 20.0 dBm 11.0 dBm
Attenuation: 30.0 dB 15.0 dB

Speed (kbps): 7168 0 544 0
Reed-Solomon EC: 254 0 2 0
CRC Errors: 13 0 2 0
Header Errors: 11 0 1 1

My line is pretty crappy with an attenuation of 58 db but the SNR was pretty high before. Now it's on 3.6mbit the SNR has dropped to a rather worryingly low 6.4 db. Time will tell if that's ok or not :) However, even when downloading, the SNR stays on 6 db.

Before:

Connection Speed 1152 kbps / 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 58.0 db / 31.5 db
Noise Margin 23.0 db / 22.0 db

After:

Connection Speed 3616 kbps / 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 58.0 db / 31.5 db
Noise Margin 6.4 db / 19.0 db

hmm well if that's 13,020 CRCs then that's probably your problem. high errors mean packet retransmission, also things like contention, traffic shaping play a part.

If your synced at 7mbit then you'll get close to that in DL speed. No reason not to. The limiting factors are not connection, it's the source of files or errors or some other menace at either end of the line.

Remember there's a BT limiter that keeps you at 2mbit for a while then gradually increases the data rate in 500kbps increments over a couple of days.

The target SNR that BT's kit aims for is 6dB for a stable connection IIRC, nothing to worry about as if the connection keeps dropping the BT gear will simply resync at a lower speed to give you a higher SNR :)

if your SNR is borderline(.4 is so) then you might wanna yank out the ring wire if the socket your in has one. you don't need it with a filter (they have ring capacitors in them, as do most modern phones too) and all it's doing while sitting idle is acting like an aerial and buggering the twisted pair effect on the live pair. This increases SNR and although the difference probably won't be big it could just push you up clear of relegation to lower sync.

I also cant recommend the filtered face plates enough. That would quite possibly pull your stats up by a fair bit too. If you can live with phones only plugged into the main BT socket (use a couple of cordless instead of extensions?) as said above but completely disconnecting extensions will remove any possible aeriel effect.

These 2 made a difference of about 3db SNR on mine. Think the original faceplate on the master socket was fairly mashed and not helping though.

I have been looking for line stats on a 1 Mb line (the same as mine) and as your line stats before the upgrade were similar to mine as they are now, I am hoping that I also get your 3.5 Mb speed after I get on to Max DSL.

My current line stats are:

Connection Speed 1152 kbps / 288 kbps
Attenuation (up/down) 32 dB / 54 dB
SNR (up/down) 24 dB / 29 dB

I now have reason to believe that BT's estimator may not be too optimistic after all as it says that I may be able to get 3.5 Mb or higher
