With these restrictions in mind..........

Under £17.99 a month
No problems with a 2Gb cap
No activation fee
FREE modem
No problems with 12 month contract

This lot rules out Zen and Nildram :(

Was looking at Eclipse - they will do surfing, email and little else.

Comments or suggestions please ?

Thanks in advance :) (oh and sorry for yet another which ISP question)

Not much choice other than cough up really, unless you go with someone like PlusNet (in which case you're stuck for five years).

So Eclipse not an option ? - as they seemed to have a reasonable rep. and fit all the criteria........

They've been decent in the past, but

you won't get a free router from anyone really, and a USB modem is worthless.

(Eclipse give you a "free wireless router" on their £29.99 setup)

So the free modem's an ornament...

Crappy throughput and sync rates usually. Most sensible ISPs (including BT) are swapping them out for (lobotomised) routers.

The lack of easily accessible stats (attenuation, SNR margin, error counters) makes it an annoyance when something goes wrong (and with Max it's a decent likelihood) too.

For what it's worth, personally, I'd just cough up the activation fee.

At least then you aren't tied for (at least) a year, and given how quickly things can go rotten (eg PlusNet and their continually changing T&Cs, Enta and their miscommunicated traffic shaping), that can only be a good thing.

Looks like the Nildram with the activation fee and a router then :)
