ADSL MAX from BT - Does it vary!?

I upgraded to 8 meg on the 9th of May.

It is now the 23'rd, so i am way past the 10 day period.

I checked my speed this morning (as i seem to be doing all the time lately!) and it was saying 5.1 meg down. Fair enough, ok, i can't get 8meg but 5 is ok.

Well actually, that annoys me as BT said i could get 6.5, but anyway!...

So i checked again just, and it says 2.1.

So my question is, does MAX actually vary your speed and more users on your exchange means you get a crap rate at peak times?

If this is the future, i want my money back!

I don't really need 5 meg in the morning! I need it now!

Sorry, ranting a bit, but the question is clear hopefully.

(BT broadband this is)

1. The sync rate is free to change whenever you reconnect, it's not fixed at an artificially high/low rate, the BT equipment just aims for a target SNR of 6.0dB (default setting) and you sync at the maximum rate possible at that SNR.

2. The BT Guestimator has never been particularly accurate and is there as a guide only

3. Your internal wiring sounds pretty bad if you're seeing variations like that, which ties in with #2. You may be able to get 6.5M if you sort out your internal wiring/filters/etc. Try connecting the modem/router to the master socket

4. I doubt you'll ever really get top speed at peak time due to contention. Contention has always existed but it's been pretty much impossible to notice before MaxDSL. Now with people being able to download a lot faster than they were able to before, without a similar increase in capacity at the ISP (which ain't gonna happen) contention is going to be a lot more noticable which is why things like traffic shaping & caps are necessary.

BTw/Your ISP aren't limiting your line rate in the evening, a poor quality line with a fluctuating SNR is (which is most probably down to poor quality wiring in the house)

It also depends how exactly you "checked" your "speed" - the sync rate your modem's reporting, or the result off some speedtester?

Speed check using ADSL guide and bbmax.
Sync rates off my Netgear Router.

I've been looking into rewiring, and trying with mastersocket first, i'll get around to it some time over the next few weeks.

Would i recommend ADSL Max - No way, cost me extra and i get no extra!

So you're synching at 5Mbps according to your router, but only getting 2Mbps?
It should go up (eventually).

Im getting the same Problem, My router reports that im synching at 5mbs but i am not getting any speeds better than 2mbs.

Has my isp got a cap in place?

Isp is Eclipse.

Sounds like congestion. Nowt you can do about it.
Might be worth poking the ISP for what your BRAS limit is set to, but other than that there isn't a lot to do.

Doubt it, it's either the BRAS limit, or congestion (see above).
