Hi there, Having been on AOL since i got my first pc about 4 years ago, I have recently been upgraded to their 8 meg service :)
I was on 2 meg before and enjoyed speeds of 240Kb/s on downloads.
Now I connect through a router as i can't stand the software they force upon people but since upgrading i havent noticed a speed increase.
My router quotes the figures of 3936Kb/448Kb as the connection speed, yet i still get the same download speed as before, but wiht higher pings :@

I have been on this for over a month now, so I am wondering whats up, it originally connected at 5446 instead of 3936, but i guess that was the 10 day period of trying to get stability.

Any advice?

What router is it? Have you tried doing a factory reset on it and starting from scratch? Have you tried any others, or just a straight ADSL modem?

I'm not sure if you still can, but it used to be possible to log onto a BT Speedtest ADSL login, if you can, give that a try. What are you using for your current speed tests? What's you upload speed looking like?

Routers are important imo, i had a linksys AG041 and best speeds i could get was 3 meg with highest sync i saw of 4670 when it first went live but always settled around 3900 mark(3meg).

I upgraded my router to a Netgear DG834G well i say upgraded my sister gave it me and my speeds gone up straight away, hightest sync i had was 6072, even managed 580kbs at one point, it settled at 4 meg speeds now though with syncs of around 5000kbs, but just goes to show a router can help.

agreed

i used to have 3 to 4mb speeds with my old router

now i have a speedtouch 585i v6 [which ocuk sell]

i get 5mb speeds, sometimes 6

The BT Speedtest will give you the IP profile you're on, which would give some indication of whether you had a stuck profile or just congestion.
If the 3936kbps sync rate is stable (or at least, doesn't go below 3424kbps), you should expect 3Mbps.

I was in a similar situation when I got upgraded to MAX. My router (DG834) was connecting at 8Mbps, yet I was still getting speeds of 1MBps, which was my previous speed.

Got onto my ISP (well, posted in a thread on the metronet forums) and they reset my BRAS profile or something and bingo. Apparently something had not updated at the ISP end. Speed varies between 2 and 7 now depending on the time of day (exchange is congested, I think)

So I suggest you raise it with your ISP to see if they can do anything.

:)

It slways depends how far from you and how popular your exchange is...

That affects the speeds big time, im on 8mb and i have atleast 6000kbps at all times, usually just over 6500...

I think the problem is with the actual throughput not the connection speed :)
