Im really confused at the moment guys.

Im trying to setup a configuration with a standalone ADSL Modem (Draytek Vigor 120) and a Router (Linksys E1000).

At the moment I havent even started on the router setup, Ive been trying to get the ADSL Modem working.

I had a previous thread about trying to log onto my Sky Broadband internet service. It turned out you need to extract the username and password for my connection from the router. I googled that and got that sorted.

But now, when I connect to Sky broadband with the ADSL Modem, the connection is waaaaaaaaay slower than with Skys router they issued.

With Skys Sagem F@ST 2504n Router I get about an 11mbps connection.

With the Draytek Modem I only get 3.5mbps! WTF?!

I did a test download of iTunes from Apples website (the file is about 60mb) I was getting about 1.2 - 1.5mb download speed on the Router, but only 300 - 500kb with the Modem.

Im so confused, how can one peice of equipment connect faster than another on the same phone line and same phone socket? (Not at the same time obviously) And its not a small difference in speed either, its a huge difference.

Both Router and the Modem are set up the same, to use PPPoA.

This thing is driving me nuts! :(

Heres some pics...

If you connect to the Vigor 120 (192.168.2.1 IIRC), what are the line stats? You might need to plug your PC straight into the Vigor 120 to access the web page for it.

Any chance of a screenshot of the settings section of the 120?

Could it be using the wrong protocol, i.e. ADSL1 rather than ADSL2+?

are you sure you cannot just use the sky router? why are you complicating your life?

it might just be the adsl chip in the sky router is better.... not all routers will train to the same speed..

also what connection method is it using? adsl2 or adsl2+ - are they both using the same..

It'll be the settings I'm sure I've had this issue in the past with my vigor 100.

Have updated with some pics.

As you can see the connection (although it dosent say it exact, I have done a speedtest.net test) the Draytek connects at about 3-4MB. And the Sky Router is currently on 13MB! Tested that too on speedtest.

I showed the drop down menu on the Draytek pic to show the various modulation options, its set to Multimode by default.

Does this need to be changed?

If you plug in the Sagem do you still get the same speed as before?

If not, it could be a problem with your bras profile.

Yep, when I reconnect the Sky Router after trying the Modem, it always connects at the same speed again. Ive been plugging and unplugging the router and modem loads of times today, but each time the router connects at about the same speed. Much faster than what the Modem does.

Odd,

I'd probably try upgrading the firmware to the latest

Just tried that......no difference. :(

Any other suggestions. This may sound silly but is it possible the Modem just cannot connect at high speeds similar to the Sagem Router and it was basically a waste of money?

Try setting it to the G992.5 rather than multimode? In fact if you've not tried yet, go through the list perhaps? See if it helps.

I know how frustrating it can be :( I had similar issues a while back on Sky with my 100, I swear it's because Sky use a slightly different setup, especially with the MER stuff they provide.

Massive difference on attenuation between those modems. I'm not sure what criteria modems use to work out this figure but clearly in this case the second router Is deciding that the line is poor and only allowing a fraction of the frequencies to be used.

Something clearly wrong with it. You'd Expect maybe a single digit difference at most. For example between my Broadcom chipset modem and my non Broadcom chipset modem i get a 2 dB difference.
