I have a Netgear DG824M ADSL modem router combo which has worked for years and years and still performs (almost) perfectly. For normal use, browsing, games etc its absolutely fine. However, for P2P use it falls over with annoying regularity.
It's definitely a P2P problem, in fact torrents specifically. So far as I can make out, the torrent protocol makes lots and lots of connections at once and transfers anything from tiny to large bandwidths across these connections. The router needs some kind of memory to allocate the IP addresses to some internal system and apparently my router just doesnt have enough space available to run the torrent software at default settings. Even with the maximum number of connections in the torrent software severely reduced (effectively crippiling the torrent protocol on my machine) the router regularly crashes and needs power cycling.
Ok, I'm happy to replace my now rather old router with something shiny and new but how can I tell if the new device will have enough memory to cope with the torrent protocol? The specification pages never seem to have useful data such as 'maximum number of simultaneous connections' or 'lots of memory for address tables' etc.
I've had a good search on the web and found a few semi-useful pages but I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has any ideas...
Cheers
