As for the wireless, any reason you want to do this? So long as you have WPA2 and a 13 character password, you've got nothing to worry about with intruders, since there's no practical hack for WPA2 on a home network.
Don't see the point of leaving wi-fi on if the laptop isn't in use. And a button on the device is the most intutive method for turning it on/off, for all people involved.
