im sick and tired of our crappy 2wire adsl router. i can't complain that much, however, as it was a freebie from work. it just falls over when me and my flatmate are torrenting. even when were not torrenting it still needs a bounce every week or so.
so, as a bit of a project im looking to go the *nix firewall route. i've got a sff pc sorted out and i snapped up a pci adsl modem based on the conexant chipset for a bargain 99p from a popular auction site. tried it with ipcop and it is supported and it works but it drops out a lot - apparently you can hack away at the config files to try and resolve this but i don't really know what im looking at, not to say i couldnt learn though! i've tried endian (ipcop on pro-plus) on it and i prefer the interface (and the features!) but it looks like only the usb conexant modem is supported!
i've looked at monowall but there doesnt seem to be a hardware compatibility list anywhere. i've downloaded it though so i will give it a whirl. i know there is also freesco, which i am also going to look at.
anywho, if push comes to shove i will just get an adsl to ethernet modem and run the wan interface of the firewall via ethernet. so, after recommendations of makes/models for decent kit that i can hopefully snap up for much cheapness!
