Only broadband i'd ever had has been cable, but after moving into an ADSL 2+ exchange, i'm moving to ADSL (most i can get on normal ADSL is 4meg, for which i may as well get unlimited cable for £25/month)

now quick question, for the ADSL installation, does an engineer actually vist you anymore ? or are you just mailed a filer and modem/router in the post and expected to set it up yourself ?

if so i need a phone extension socket setting up in the bedroom where i want the internet. is this a specialist job, or something i can do with some bits from a well known highstreet electronics retailer ?

I suppose it depends on the provider.

My 8Mb ADSL comes through my analog telephone line, no engineer visited. I bought the router myself and just configured it for the ADSL connection and i just have splitters on my telephone sockets.

I assume an engineer may need to visit your local exchange to do some config but other than that, i don't think you'll need an engineer to visit.

Hi

On most home ADSL services there is no engineer visit to your house the engineer does go to the exchange to jumper your line for ADSL.

The ISP will send you the modem/router if you selected one during sign up with them.

You will need a micro filter for every device that connects to your phone line this includes sky TV boxes etc.

If you want to fit an extension to your phoen line so you have a socket up tair you can and is not to difficult.

Be aware that ISP's will only provide support to the Master BT socket most of the time now so if there are issues they may ask you to move the router downstairs to the master socket this is to rule out issues with your internal wiring.

Hope that helps

hmm

the room in question is directly above the phone socket. Do i keep the router downstairs and faf about with a phone extension. Or just run a cat 5 lead upstairs and add a gigabit switch

You wouldnt need a gigabit switch unless you have multiple PC's upstairs as most routers on do upto 100mb, or if only 1 pc you wouldnt need a switch/hub at all

You can do a DIY extenstion however it could add interferance and so lower you connection speed/stable connection. I have a very long line (only just get 1mb) and have the router 15m from the phone point and it doesnt make a difference to me. You can also buy gold plated "professional" RJ45 lines which might be better quality but I have no experience of them.

i've currently got 2 PCs and a NAS device. All with gigabit connections plugged into a 100mb router. I was toying with adding a gigabit switch anyway. This may be the easier way to do it.

My setup is the main telephone socket in the living room downstairs and my computer is in a room directly above it, i got an engineer to come an install a line going from the main socket downstairs to my upstairs room so i didn't have trailing wires.

How much that cost?
