Hi,

I'm one of these sponging student types, and need to source an ISP for my house this year. However, we are moving in shortly, but will be out of the house next June, as such I'd rather not get tied down with a 12 month contract when we only want 10 months - does anyone have any suggestions as to any ISPs that offer a shorter contract, and are any good?

Cheers,

SS

Most ISPs don't force you to have 12 month contracts, but you will have to pay the activation fee (~£40-50) up front.

if memory serves me Bulldog's 8MB service was a monthly contract (or at least it was a few months ago) and only costs a £1 for installation plus free modem.

I'm sure I heard that NTL do a special student type contract which lasts for 9/10 months so give them a try.

Newnet

I am currently migrating to Newnet from Freedom2surf. You have the option of a monthly contract or an annual contract with the monthly option being a few quid more per month.
Montly contract prices are Adsl MAX upto 8mb 25gb-£19, 60gb-£22

Cable (NTL/TW) student pack is 9 months - and doesn't require a phone line, (skypeout is about a tenner for 3 months if you are that bothered) migrations to AOL are monthly contract if you have your own hardware and Virgin are the same but will hit you with the activation fee if you disc w/in 12 months.

Let us know what you decide to do as a lot of other people on here are probably in the same boat about now.

Virgin have no contract but I noticed on the t's and c's they now have a £50 charge at their discretion if you want to end it before a year is up. However, it might be worth a phone call to them. As they are generally a decent and fair company that charge might be only put on if you've only been connected for a short period like 3 months.

before you signup make sure you read the terms and conditions as several of the ISPs that offer short contracts have stuff about paying the install charge. If you go with a ISP that uses BT network then the ISP will be charged a connection fee by BT of £40ish and so just make sure you read the ts & cs before you signup

a lot of isps do 1month contracts but your problem is the phoneline that broadband goes on, the standard BT contract is 12months.

NTL student packages are 9months if you can get ntl

bulldog is 12month contract phoneline, broadband is 1month (im on that - 16mb :) )

From my experience in the last two years at University, they don't enforce this. They even said so when I asked them on the phone and told them it would be around 8/9 months.
