Hi,

We have just moved into quite a large victorian house, with nice thick walls that is happily killing the very limited wifi capability of the generic router that came from our ISP. Having all sorts of other problems as well, with my wifes phone and laptop constantly losing connection even in the same room, so it's time for an upgrade. Is it realistic to expect a single device to work at ranges of up to 20m, through solid stone walls, or would I be more realistic thinking about boosters?

Can anyone please recommend something that has decent signal strength? Budget is ideally about £50, but could spend more (up to £100 max) if it would make a huge difference. Strength and reliability are the most important factors, but the ability to stream from a USB drive plugged into it would be nice. Also, willing to spend a but more on dual band if people really think it makes a difference? Only two of us using it at the moment, but the children will be wanting their own devices before long...

Cheers!

I think you could look at Asus here. I've installed a n56u and notice better wireless. Signal a little better but speed def better. In terms of guaranteeing a solution I don't think anyone can say with certainty what will happen. If you don't notice a difference you can always DSR the router and maybe look at a home plug solution.

I'd start off with the Asus and set the TX Power to 100mW for extra coverage. If you're still not getting coverage everywhere, you could stick a single powerline adapter near the Asus, then buy maybe 1 or 2 of the other adapters that work as access points. Use WPS so these adapters use the same wifi ssid password etc so it should be nice and smooth everywhere.

Thanks guys, it was the Asus ones I was looking at anyway, so that's reassuring to know. I know I might well need to to use powerlines, expecially for the top floor, but thought it was worth a try!
