Due to my old adsl modem being no use for my new computer...64 bit vista due to the lack of drivers I bought a Sweex 2/2+ adsl moden router which includes a built in firewall which works fine. This is the first time I've ever used a router so I suppose I just need a litlle assuring from the experts.
As I only have one computer at the moment do I really need to get a software firewall for example Zonealarm etc, as well as using the built in one ?

There are 2 types of firewalls, hardware and software.

If you have a hardware firewall there is no need for a software one (only if you want to monitor outbound traffic.

As routers have matured now with built in firewalls, nat e.t.c there is no reason any more to have a software firewall.
