ADSL Router Question

Stupid question, but some tutorials I've read say you need to connect your router to a broadband modem although this screen shows you can connect the router straight to the splitter. Which is it?

Look at this screenshot from the same site this is confusing me:-

The 1st diagram is for a combined router/modem, the 2nd diagram is for a standalone router and seperate modem.
