Minor rant time......
So, I've moved from VM cable and a brilliant WRT54GS/ Tomato combination to a Sky ADSL connection- All is well in the world, other than QOS :o

To this end, I acquired an exceedingly cheap Draytek 2710n from the MM, and I was hoping for something supporting a reasonable level of QOS, and a simple enough configuration- I was horribly wrong on that part

All I really want to do is setup three distinct QOS categories-
1. High priority, catching VOIP calls, web browsing and BF2/ WOW.
2. Standard priority http downloads/ streaming.
3. Low priority for all traffic to the server and any torrents/ P2P activity.
In the Draytek, I've been left digging through a mound of badly described options, and it doesn't even seem to have a default P2P and VOIP detection, but simply works on a ports basis.

Is there an ADSL router that actually lets me do this easily (My second choice would have been a Billion 7700N), or am I going to end up sticking the Draytek into bridge mode and going back to Tomato?

I had this issue for me and for the last couple of years struggled to find a solution - last couple of years being significant as the children were getting older and the network was getting hit harder which was pretty much killing my ability to game without yelling up to them which was a tad embarrassing

The only adsl qos solution imho is Gargoyle. I posted a thread here

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18351858

At the end you will see a link to where the dev talks about qos which is a great article in itself. Why it is the only one is because of how adsl works. With adsl the connection is not static so one minute you can have an 8mb connection then next down to 3mb and traditional qos require a reserved part of the bandwidth to stop congestion. With gargoyle it has a setting to monitor the line and as it detects the ping to the isp degrading it brings the speed down appropriately which keeps the line from being congested and also makes the best use of the line for qos. It is the only solution as far as I am aware that has done this

Its a great firmware in itself and if you get one of the routers like the netgear 3700 then you literally just use netgears own firmware update process to upgrade it. You should note that you need an adsl modem to connect using this solution but I got a netgear 834 (£20) and used a page provided by netgear to change it to a modem. Read the thread and post questions :)

I've been using Gargoyle now for 4 months and their isn't a comparable router solution in this class imho

For my qos solution I split the family members into classes so each member has his own class and this has worked incredibly well - but they do have all the typical qos config and more - I can post screenies of the config if it would help.

QoS on my N300 works fine.

Not the best router going but works.

Which version?
I can see various versions, mainly differentiated by the case design AFAIK

Also tempted to try dropping Gargoyle on the WRT54GS and running the 2710n in bridge mode, although that would give me far too many boxes behind the desk, as I need a gigabit switch there :o

Go for the Billion.

I had the 7800N and whilst it is a nice router it's QOS is non existent - which was disappointing as I specifically went for it for the QOS element - part of the reason for my Gargoyle post tbh. It was in the Whirlpool Billion forums that the recommendation was made to go for Gargoyle if you want QOS working :)

As I said I went through a lot of routers and was prepared to throw money at this one to get a solution. QOS is a strange one, you don't know it's working until you experience it not :) So some people may be having no problems and think the QOS is working when its just not been tested. I've also seen the argument that QOS doesn't work on the download for ADSL - it does, but is difficult due to the bandwidth changes that occur on adsl. Read the post in the Gargoyle thread, its the last one - worth the read if you are at all interested in QOS.

Depends what an issue it is - these items can be anywhere they don't need to be on the desk, not seen the specs of the wrt, I went for the 3700v2 specifically with Gargoyle in mind as it seems to have crazy hardware specs for the price;)

My initial point entirely :)
Hitting torrents with the Draytek causes everything else to go to pot, even though it claims to have QOS.

Too many boxes behind the desk is a big issue for me- I'm already using 10 plugs there, and another one is something I could do without.

I'm almost tempted to start trying to build a customised version of the Draytek firmware, but I've not really got the time for that.

Understood - I can't help on the plug side, space wise it's not too bad (mine is quite tidy in fact) but a plug is a plug. The actual qos setup is very clear as well. If you look at the screenies I posted you get a clear view on the classes active and also how the connection is doing. My class system is simpler due to wanting to divide the family (makes stats easier as well) but I know it works when I see the line under load and yet the pings remain static.

One other advantage of gargoyle qos solution is the dev pbix is still very active on the gargoyle forums and still actively improving it - I think he survives on a 1mb connection so he has a real reason for wanting qos on poor lines to work :)
