Can anyone recommend a decent ADSL modem? I want to replace my sky router and connect it to my Cisco lab. The current router is quite restrictive.

Thanks.

Vigor 120 is super simple. Only restriction is one Ethernet port so to check line stats means disconnecting it from your router or trying to get some sort of static route working.

If you want functionality the Asus DSL-N55U is worth looking at, the Netgear DG834 is a good option if line syncing abilities are a consideration (its very good with bad lines) and can also be flashed with custom firmwares with a ton of advanced features.

Looking more for a modem. I have a Netgear DG834 already, might use that first to make sure i have got my sky username and password correct before purchasing something.

I have a 2620 and 2610XM routers. I am new to the world of Cisco but having to learn it pretty damn quick for work.

Ouch, those cards aren't cheap

Vigor 120.

My line used to train at 18Mbit/Sec with SnR tweaed down to 3Db on a custom firmware DG834.

Put a Vigor 120 v2 on and it trained instantly at 19Mbit/sec with 6Db without any tweaks.

IIRC the Vigor chipset is better for those closer to the exchange while a Netgear(Broadcom?) chipset will be better for longer/more sensitive lines.

120 gives you a straight forward PPPoA-PPPoE bridge and just works. Lovely bit of kit even if a little pricey. I think it's the ONLY ADSL2 modem that will give you a proper PPPoE-PPPoA bridge without double NATing etc. Mine is plugged into my pfSense router and it dials PPPoE directly without any issues.

I do some manual outbound NAT rules which allows me to access the modems web interface to monitor line stats etc even though it only has one ethernet port.

I'd keep that and pair it with something like a Asus RT-N56U. That way you get a good line sync and you can still reboot the router or kick a ISP session without messing with the line. Just put the DG834 in modem mode and forget about it.

I am fairly close to the exchange to get about 17mb. I will test it with the Netgear DG834 first as need to check my sky username and password I acquired are correct.

I used the Netgear DG834PN. I can see that it connects as i get a line speed but i am unable to get a router (apple airport extreme) or my mac to connect to it with pppoe.

If your sky is PPPoA only and does not support PPPoE then you either need to double NAT (nasty) or get a proper modem which does PPPoE-PPPoA bridging (I.E the Vigor 1xx series)

I use the DG834N with custom firmware its really good on my line which is a long one and its never caused me any issues had it for about 4 years now at least, my network is made up for home plugs i don't use wireless on it.

I have got the Netgear DG834PN working as a modem on sky so its a start. I gives me the option of RIP and adding static routes so hopefully i wont need a modem after all.

EDIT:

down and up stream seem to have connected lower than normal but this is a 5 year old router

Thanks.
