Hi All, I don't usually come to this section but I need help in choosing a mid range router.

My parents recently switched to Orange Internet and as a result we were given a Netgear DGN1000 router (the most basic one you could get) and consequently if I turn N speeds on (150mbps) the signal just turns to putty and you cant do anything.

So I'm looking for a router replacement, has to be below £50. Our old netgear router was fantastic but sadly doesn't support ADSL2+ so it doesn't matter if it's netgear if it's good I trust them as a company

I've been looking at a "TP-Link TL-WR1043ND" but unsure on them as a company.

Cheers

edit - Also needs a modem, so tp link is out of the question.

Hey,

I'm currently with *spits* Orange and as you say the Netgear is pants, so I've just upgraded to the TP-Link TD-W8960N which is an ADSL2+ Modem/Router and can be had for £35 in a South American Jungle ;)

The wireless is a lot better and so is the general use, I've found the downloads are quicker and more solid (both hardwire & wireless).

So far so good, apparently it also has the Broadcom chipset, so its good for lines that are a fair distance from the exchange.

I've also heard that if you set the router to just N speeds and not auto (same with the receiver, and also set a set wireless channel on both router/pc then you are likely to get a much better wireless service out of it.

Hope this helps :)

PPS, don't be tempted by the 8961, its not an upgrade despite the model number being higher, even the box of the 8960 shows that, and it has less features and doesn't have the broadcom chipset in it IIRC.

Agreed on the 8961. It struggled with my short line and kept dropping every few days. My Broadcom dg834gt can keep the connection for many weeks. I use the 8961 as a wireless access point now.

dont forget most N routers switch to G only if a G device attaches...

make sure you are not sharing chanels with next door, these routers are stupid...
