Hey all,
I’ve signed up to cuckoo internet and I have chosen to provide my own router.

I barely know what I’m doing when it comes to networking, I have a mesh system at home and just looking for something that’s decent to plug into that.

Budget around £100.

Thanks

You want an ADSL2+ modem....

Can you even buy them in the UK? i personally would have taken whatever is bundled with the ISP.

Your probably going to have to buy a full ADSL router and turn all the features off, waste of money.

it even says on their website

Our routers are free, we just ask that you send them back if you leave Cuckoo so that we can recycle them.

hönset get that and bridge it into your mesh setup. save your money.

If it's ADSL only, you could get an old DrayTek Vigor120. They'll handle the translation from PPPoE to PPPoA you'll need to use the routing features of the mesh system.

They seem to be available for £20 or less secondhand. The newer Vigor130 will also handle it at a much higher cost (but will also handle VDSL).

If you need VDSL only, get a secondhand HG612.

If you barely know what you're doing, how did you determine that the provided router would not be suitable for you?

As far as I know Cuckoo don't even offer ADSL2+. Do you mean VDSL2?

With a secondhand Vigor120 being virtually as cheap as an HG612, I'd say that it's a much better option for ADSL.

It's possible to get an HG612 to work with ADSL, but it's not straightforward. The Vigor120's main selling point was that it could accept a PPPoE connection from a router and translate it into a PPPoA connection to work in the UK. The HG612 isn't going to do that.

It's all probably moot anyway as the OP hasn't bothered to come back.

I’ve not actually done this myself and I made the mistake of believing the eBay seller description when they said it was ‘straightforward’ to get it working with ADSL. Thank you for the clarification and my apologies to the OP if I gave them duff advice. Draytek it is then.
