Great advanced guide but I have one observation.

Remembering back to my A level physics a metallic shiny surface adsorbs heat less effectively than a dull one.

Okay most of the heat transfer is done by conduction - metal on metal but a highly reflective surface reduces heat transfer via radiation therefore in theory two equal metals touching each other, if they are both "dull" they will transfer heat better (very slightly) than if they are both polished.
