Advantages and disadvantages of having a static ip address? Are there any disadvantages of having a static IP address and does it cost anymore? Thanks.

are we talking via your ISP? If so, it makes running a server or similiar services easier as you can log in with your IP address. So, for example, you run a webserver, typing the static IP assigned to you will goto the web server default page. If you combine this with a DNS service you could feasibly run your sites direct from home...

its great if you use remote desktop etc or even for hosting teamspeak etc

bad if your ip somehow gets onto a bad list like peerblock as unlikely as that is would also make you easier to track if the mpaa came after you lol

Im on VM which is meant to be dynamic IP's yet my IP hasnt changed since I signed up. So yea the lease time is immense

Yeah, VM modems are funny like that. It's dynamic, but pretty much static until they have network changes OR you change the MAC address on whatever is connected to the modems WAN port.

Useful for when you get banned from IRC servers or whatever :p

indeed. my vm ip has been the same for 3 maybe 4 years or more.

As for dynamic or static, go static every time. It's the way it's meant to be.

Static IP is one less thing to go wrong, and it generally makes life easier with VPN and DNS configs.

That said, unless you're completely reliant on remote connectivity, E.G site to site VPN, I wouldn't ballache over it. My package comes with one free, which is great, but some ISPs charge £4-5 per month extra for static IP on their packages. In which case it's not worth it.
