I am currently running the system in the sig, with a MSI P67A-C45 mobo; 2 SATA III SSDs and an external USB3.0 HDD.

I have just acquired a Giga-byte GA-Z77-D3H; what advantages are there to swaping out the MSI for the Giga-byte?

I am also in the process of swapping over to the same motherboard as you and I'm currently run a similiar board to you too (MSI P67A-GD53), the main reason for me upgrading is so I can have better overclocking capabilities and to be able to upgrade to an Ivybridge CPU in the near future.

Done the swap; major problem was the board is wider making it difficult to attach the SATA III cables as the HDD bay was in the way.

I ended up swapping the Z77-D3H for the Z77X-UP4 TH in the end as I wanted to go for a more premium board with a few more features, and the VIA onboard sound on these boards are terrible and the Z77X-UP4 TH features the Realtek sound chipset which is much better (my older MSI board used the same Realtek sound chipset). Don't get me wrong the D3H is a solid reliable board and is brilliant for the price but there is only so much you get for under £90 :)
