Hi my brothers laptop is not powering on, not even the charge lights come on.

So we took it to our local pc shop and they said it's an internal fault and it will cost £70 or more, so is it worth me and my brother doing this as we have a rough idea of what it will be??

We think it's the charge input thats broke so would have to get one of them.

Here is the item number for ebay for the part we are on about.

Laptop is a Advent 5611

Depends if you are skilled enough to properly dismantle the laptop and more importantly skilled enough to desolder the power jack.

I managed to replace a power jack. It's worth watching a couple of videos showing exactly how to do it. It was still difficult because at first it didn't seem that it would work but with patience and persistence it eventually came loose.

These are fairly easy to do, if you take your time and watch a couple of guides, might be cheaper to take the board out yourself and take the board and socket to a repair shop or mate, its a 20 minute job max to do the actual socket.

I don't mean skilled like a brain surgeon but still it's not that easy to properly dismantle a laptop without breaking or damaging something - it all depends on how tedious it is and some laptops can be a real pain to dismantle.

I assumed because you were asking on here you hadn't much experience so I was letting you know it's not that easy and it requires some patience and skill to accomplish.

Yeah, I Know what you mean take your time with it etc but i just want to be telling my brother what to undo first etc instead of me doing it and he blaming me if aything brakes :D

But i will be doing the soldering.

I just need to know what parts to undo first obviously the battery but after that what other parts do i take out first???????

Your best bet is to try to find a disassembly guide for your laptop otherwise you'll be disassembling it blind.

Your laptop is using the same case/chassis as the Advent 5431 so you can follow it's disassembly instructions on the following forum post:

http://www.adventsupport.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6792&start=0#p18106

Look at the stickers on the base of your laptop for the chassis type which is U51IL1.

Also you should read the part at the bottom about the power jack issues before you start as it suggests there could be a possibility of it not being easy to repair.

We will be repairing the laptop this week maybe next, Do i need special solder??? As not to sure???

This is what i have: Flux covered electrical solder 60:40 tin/lead

cheers Luke
