just checked the bbc website only to find adverts on it?

is this the start of the bbc moving to a self funding model perhaps?

You must be using bbc.com and not bbc.co.uk, are you on a VPN? When I log into my work VPN which is overseas I get redirected to bbc.com which has ads.

There is no advertising on the UK BBC website. Worldwide, maybe but not in the UK.
