Hey

I'm just looking for a bit of advice really from all the people running / working doing computer repairs

What would you say is the best way to advertise?

I've got a number of customers at the moment who I've had further business from and they tell their friends who I also get business from.

But I'm looking to expand and therefore advertising is needed

So what is the best way to advertise and ideally the least expensive option

Many Thanks

well word of mouth is by far the cheapest form of advertising so continue doing a great job.
who your target group are will determine what response you get, the home user or corporate/business users and where you advertise.

assuming your urban based, the free ad style papers offer good coverage but are probably well covered. We live in a rural location and as such dont get those freebies so we use the local parish magazines which produce a good response over a long time, a slow burn effect which is quite cost effective. We also write a weekly piece for a large circulation weekly freebie which covers a large area and is distributed by pubs, local shops etc we have done door drops to and again slow response but over time people often ring many months later. Our business is different in what we supply but the same technique applies as both service industries.

Many Thanks

I'm targeting home users, as quite often their knowledge is low and their problems simple. I don't use this as an opportunity to exploit them, but use it as a chance to increase their knowledge and keep them happy by resolving the issues.

They all seem to like my approach and have proved it by recommending me.

I will try local papers and placing some professionaly made cards around local shops.

Any other ideas?

Have you thought about directly targeting small businesses? We've got an office of about 50 people, but there is only one dedicated IT guy in our part of the company. If I was running a smaller office of 10 or so people, I would be loathed to spend more on a dedicated IT guy, with all the associated cost of employing an additional someone. So I'd be looking for a company to provide a fast support solution.

Don't know what stage you're at, maybe you're past that already. Hope it goes well, best of luck with your business.

Hi

Thanks for the sugguestion

I would like to get into the small business sector eventually, but I'm in my final year of Uni so couldn't drop everything at their say-so unfortunatly

Home users are great as they generally prefer me to go round evenings and weekends when they're home, so it's a win-win situation

Any other ideas??

Thanks

Very enterprising getting that sort of thing going while you're still at Uni, have a thumbs up :)

Does it pay well - keep you in fans, graphics cards, new cpus etc?

LOL perhaps I should have said "What do others find an effective method of advertising is"?

Any other sugguestions?

Yeah, it keeps me going quite nicely with Uni, but as summer is fast approaching I'm looking to take on more work.

Thanks for the thumbs up :D

I'd 'guess' moving onto small shops, they (a) probably have a PC (or two) for general internet stuff and (b) don't have the first clue how to fault fix. Can't hurt to ask, leave a few cards at the shop, spread the word among local small businesses.

drive around with 'netstumbler' running on a laptop,

then push leaflets through the doors of people still running their wi-fi as open/WEP ;)

stuff leaflets into all the numptie 'puter mags in WHSmith
;)
