Advertising

But I dunno about you guys, I have basically trained my brain to block it out.

it's even better if you can just completely remove adverts from your day to day life. my netflix doens't have adverts, i don't watch tv, my youtube is advert free (though often vids mention a sponser [usually vpns]), my music is advert free. that leaves just radio, which is rare and often if it's something like lbc, i listen back to a show at a later time, so i jump ahead to skip the ads.

so i'd say my life is massively advert free and i really appreciate that. what i find interesting is how often when in groups of friends the conversation can get to one advert or another and they always seem shocked that i've not experienced it for the last x weeks like i've been living under a rock.

The last time I remember watching an advert and went searching to buy the product was on the 12th of never.

not searching At least for car adds their purpose is mainly not to persuade you to buy the product - it is targetted for those that already took the kings shilling,
to reduce buyers remorse, reinforce cognitive dissonance.
e: gambling adds thinking you too ..you are having fun

no thanks Would be interesting to know the value of in show advertising on the likes of netflix (epitomized by Bond and his adversary cars)

Don’t know if some of you are deliberately trying to be obtuse here but you’re misunderstanding the purpose of these ads.. Yes, you might go to an insurer directly but you still know what GoCompare is, right? You might end up buying from Churchill, AXA, Direct Line et al directly but you already know who they are, right? That awareness didn’t appear out of nowhere. It’s not just about someone seeing an ad and immediately running out to buy the product. It’s about building familiarity and a mental availability so when you’re in a buying situation, that brand comes to mind first.

To use my earlier example, it’s the same reason McDonald’s, Just Eat etc keep advertising even though everyone already knows they exist.. It’s not to introduce the brand, it’s to stay top of mind. For some, the next time they’re hungry or can’t be bothered to cook, their brain doesn’t think ‘I remember that ad’, it just thinks of them.

So yes, you might not consciously think ‘I saw an ad, I’m buying that’ but that’s not how it works. You’re no better than anyone else, you’re still influenced subconsciously. They shape what you notice on the shelf, what name you type into Google, what you trust when you’re doing price comparisons or what brand comes to mind when you’re tired and hungry. That’s the point.

Well I can safely say that one product I'll never ever buy is the postcode lottery. If I have to hear that goddamn ******* piece of **** **** ad again I'll drive to their offices and end up on the front page of the daily mail
