OcUK GeForce 6800 GS 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-035-OK)

I have the following Spec System :

AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+ (1.80ghz)
1.00GB Ram 400Mhz ( i believe )
19 Inch Sync Master 913N

I currently have a 9800XT 256MB radeon

Would i notice much peformance increase oon my current system by going from the 9800XT to the 6800GS. If not would there be any other products out there that would possibly to such a job at a similar price? No more than £150.

You'll notice a difference both in speed and (in some games) picture quality. If you are planning on sticking with AGP for the time being you could do a lot worse than the 6800gs. Having said that i'd probably be tempted to go for a slightly faster card because the leap isn't THAT massive and it will be you last upgrade before a complete overhall is needed. If you can find a X800GTO2 (which unlocks and overclocks to an X850XT PE) within your price range you should go for that.

Also bare in mind that after this upgrade you'll never be able to get a significantly better card for your system without doing a complete upgrade to PCI-E.

Just had a quick scout at the X800 GTO2 looks like its within my price range. qould i see a decent increase in FPS. im not too fussed on Picture Quality.

Isnt that big a leap? LOL its a massive leap trust me, a 9800xt would get around what? 2500-3500 3dmark 05? Double that and you get the 6800GS score + it has SM3 support etc which the radeon x800 series wont have - but hes right after the 6800GS theres nothing to upgrade to really.

Forgive me for saying this, but i'm not sure why anybody would buy a 6800GS. Don't all the X800GTO2 cards unlock to 16 pipes? And they're cheaper.

Either that or find another £50-75 and go for the 7800GS in a week or so.

He needs an AGP card not PCI-E.

No GTO2 on AGP, Oops, my mistake. As for the 7800gs, at first glance it looks more like replacement for the 6800ultra than an upgrade to it.

A 6800gs will score about 4500-4600 at stock speeds on 3dmark05 while a 9800xt will get a little over 3000. (that's assuming that the 6800gs is about 5% slower than the 6800gt)

So it's a leap, but not that much of a leap. That link will also give him an idea about how the possible AGP cards relatively perform. An x800xl looks like it might be a runner as they are about the same price or even an x800xt if he can save up the extra. The 6800gs is still a good choice though and i hear they overclock well.

The 6800GS will cream the 9800XT when it comes to AA and AF - the 256mb of GDDR3 is much faster than the regular 256mb of DDR. The higher clock speeds and 4 pixel pipelines will make quite a difference in games as well.

The benefit of PS3.0 can not be a bad thing, even if it doesn't appear in games that often. Sure, it's not needed, but why pay extra for an ATi card without this feature?

The GS may overclock pretty well too?

considering I get nearly 5k on 3dmark 05 with a 6800nu overclocked I should expect you to get around 6k after a overclocked with a 6800gs

Judging from past experience, 5k on a 6800NU doesn't stand for much. When it comes to AA and AF, the 6800NU generally takes a good kicking; mainly due to only having 128Mb DDR.

Don't get me wrong - the 6800NU is a fantastic card when it comes to performance:price ratio and I thoroughly loved mine when I had it. But if you're going above 1280x1024, especially with AA or AF, it starts to strain a little bit.

They don't half overclock though :p
