I am looking to upgrade my graphics card. It has been a long time since I was any good with computer, I am more than happy to play around in the case but as soon as it starts talking about pci and what not I get lost.

I have a Defender X4 AMD FX-4 4130 @ 3.9GHz Turbo AMD Radeon Quad Core Gaming PC which I got from overclockers in march 2014.

I am looking to buy

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...ddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-300-ms.html

Which Uses PCI express 3.0. I have tried to find out what I have and I believe it is PCI express 2.0 but I have read that it does not make much difference for the card.

It also says that it has a low power consumption so should be ok.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Three questions to kick off :)

1) What's your current graphics card?

2) What resolution is your monitor?

3) What sort of games do you want to play?

(Card will fit fine into a board of that generation, but 950 ain't exactly "all that" - answering the above will help folks here figure out the right hardware for you ^^)

thanks for the quick reply's

to answer your questions

1. as far as i know it is a radeon r7 200 series
2. 1600 x 900
3. Mix of FPS and RPG's and strategy. Just bought The new total war game, runs fine but the setting are all quite low and slows a bit on larger battles.
4. power supply is Super Flower 450W 80+ Gold Rated PSU

as for budget probably no more than 150.

Ah, so pretty much anything is going to be an upgrade :)

With your budget, I'd personally look at a 960 rather than a 950. You get 30% more stream processors, higher clocks in general. There's a nice MSI one on discount, should be cool and quiet:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...-pci-express-graphics-card-red-gx-277-ms.html

...that said, I bet Total War is more limited by your CPU than your graphics card. Just a hunch. Might be worth researching that before you decide where to put your money :)

This

960 new or if you are lucky a 970 2nd hand...

I have found the total war games are very CPU dependant rather than Gpu.

In which case it might be better for the OP to sink his money into a six/eight core CPU instead.

(Realistically it would be better to sink money into an Intel rig, but that's way out of budget.)
