Advice after one of my sli 670's failed

Hi,

Can someone tell me if it is worth upgrading my sli 670 system to a newer card? I'm thinking about it as have some stability issues due to heat running sli on a m-atx board.

I was thinking about the 970 / 390 but just saw this deal for the 390x which seemed pretty good:

Would it be worth the extra money / what sort of performance increase would I see vs my sli 670 set up? (Not that it's a fair comparison as most of the time I run my system with sli disabled because of heat issues).

I largely play Dota, Elite, indie games and want to get MGS phantom pain to play at 1080p. I was planning an upgrade when Star Citizen gets released so would I be better off keeping my current system and waiting for Pascal etc?

Thanks,
Elliot

970 or 390 would both be great choices. 390X deal is ok, but still not sure whether it's worth the extra £60 over the regular 390.

EDIT: Actually, thinking about the site I'm on, not sure my offer was appropriate.

Thanks Sean, yeah I'm looking to move away from sli really. Failed is a bit strong as my cards run but I've got to make sure my system isn't taxed too heavily and so don't generate too much heat by turning down settings etc.

Would a 390 / 970 be a sideways move in terms of performance? I'm struggling to find many benchmarks comparing 670 sli performance to the current cards.

Yea, definitely something of a sideways move. I mean, you'd get the extra vRAM, which will let you turn up texture settings in modern games, so there's that. And of course for games that don't have a good(or any) scaling with SLI, it could be an improvement.

MGSV should run well at 1080p on a single 670, though. You wont be maxing it out, but it's a game that runs at 60fps even on console, so you don't need anything mega to get 1080p/60fps on PC. I mean, if that's the most demanding game you've got planned, then you'll be alright for a while. It's the games you *don't* have planned, but might want to play at some point that you'll want to think about. It's gonna be a fair wait before the next generation of cards.

Tough situation.

A 670 was slightly below a 7950 benchmark wise if i remember correctly, and i used to get about the same performance as a 980 from my crossfire 7950s, so i would think a 670 sli setup would be similar to a 970, but with all the benefits of a single card setup. The extra vram will come in very handy if you ever move to 1440p also as the 670 sli would have held ya back there.
