Advice around a 6950

Currently i'm looking at upgading my graphics card. Having looked around a bit the idea of a 6950 2gb version flashed to a 6970 is appealling, the only current problem I have with going ahead with this at the moment is i'm unsure as to if I could in future add a second card for crossfire.

Relying on future 6950's to stay flashable seems like it could be a bit risky, so if that turned out to be the case, does anyone know if a normal 6970 would function in crossfire with a flashed 6950?

Appologies if this has been answered elsewhere.

I would imagine so, however I can't verify it. Would be interesting to find out from someone who's done/attempted it.

Also, don't count on your 6950 to be flashable. I bought one and flashed it - thought it was fine but then noticed I would get random system reboots during prolonged gaming sessions. Flashed it back and now I run it with a modest 840/1325 OC without any problems. Mine is a reference Sapphire card for what it's worth.

Presuming you can flash your 6950 to a 6970's bios it will work fine. Crossfire works within series anyway, so a 6950 can be paired with a 6970 if you wanted to anyway, just unlock the shaders on the 6950 instead of the clocks.

I tend to switch between bios' on mine when I need to. But to be honest there is so little in it in terms of real world performance, I barely notice a difference between each bios. Just keep them in "50 mode" at the present time, there isn't a game they won't play maxed out (that I have come across) and not get a decent frame rate. Even in non crossfore mode i'm getting 60+frames on crysis 2 @1080p on (albeit DX9)
