Hi All,

Thought I would make sure about something before I buy a new GPU and that is this: Will my Corsair HX Series 520W Modular PSU be able to handle a GTX 260 "Core 216 55nm" (I think that's what I am going to buy unless you can give me a better suggestion for under £150, preferably nVidia cards since I'm more used to them but might be talked into buying a ATI if you got a good argument for it! ;))

I have the following already in my PC:

2 1TB HDD's
2 500GB HDD's
2 160GB HDD's in RAID1
Asus Xonar D2
8600GTS (To be replaced)

And I have a NEC24WMGX3 and Samsung 226BW in a dual set up. I am playing mostly strategy games such as AoE III, Imperuim Romanum, Civ4, Settlers V & VI, SimCity4 etc etc..

Any and all advice and suggestions will be greatly appreciated! :)

that should be enough to run it but personally i would go for a 600w psu at min with that setup
p.s. go on google and search "psu calculator"

It would work fine, but personally i'd get the £120 4870 512MB.

It's been proven that 512MB is enough for your resolution, and it's about 90% of the performance of the GTX260-216 for £20 less.

You can't go wrong with either card, but for me the cheaper one *just* edges it. :)

your psu is fine. For me the gtx260 216 wins the bang for buck over the 4850 and the extra ram is useful in some games at the res you use.

For a mere £20 more I'd still go with the GTX, it does have several other significant advantages and features aside from being only 10% faster in todays benchmarks.

Thanks for your replies guys, much appreciated!

wow, just checked the "psu calculator" and with what I have now its 416W and if I get the GTX260 it will be 499W.. which is a bit close to the mark.. maybe I should take out 2 HDD's.. would lower it to 450W.. actually, if I disconnect 2 HDD's, my fan controller, and one DVDRW then its 414W.. and maybe later get a Corsair Modular 620W PSU through the MM... hmmm how accurate are these "psu calculator" in reality?!?

Edit: Just realized I did the calculation wrongly.. I picked dual socket (thinking it meaning Core2Duo, but now realizing it actually meant 2 sockets.. duh!), in any case, with my present set up that shows as 366W and with the GTX260 at 449W.. if its 100% reliable of course!

Edit 2: How much does it affect the PSU if its almost 2 years old.. bought it June 2007.. according to the Antec PSU Calculator site they suggest an ageing of 20% per year.. is that correct?

If you can find another £22 get the 4890 on special with two free games for £172.

That's a cracking deal and the card should last you a long time.

Thanks but I'm stretching it as it is with £150.. I am even considering a 8800GTS 512MB for £60, but not sure if it will be enough for a decent gaming experience and watching DVD's with.. will it?!?

Any one? Would a 8800GTS be enough for the games above... or should I go for the GTX260?!? As long as it wont 'blow' my PSU that is.. *shudders*
