advice before the garage start acting up.

Hey all, just before christmas (it was around 15th, 16th of december ish) I had my car (Skoda felicia pickup, 1.6) in for a new starter motor (it died and was not repairable). I have had one in the past and it cost me around 60 quid.

I'm on unfamiliar grounds while i'm down at uni, so I took it to the same garage I had my MOT done at. They quoted me around 90 quid, which was steep but compared to other quotes it was okay. that was all fine until they ordered the part, had the car on the ramps and found that the part they ordered an quoted for was wrong, and basically it went on for a few days, arguing and I ended up having to pay around 170 to get it sorted. They were trying to pass the blame, saying they were not to know that part would be worng. It was the difference between the startedr having the cog fully exposed, and having a kind of cone over it.

I gave it a new battery on the 5th of jan, as I was due to drive back to uni from home and the old battery was getting a bit long in the tooth.

fast forward to today, and the new starter motor has died. I don't want to contact the garage until I know where I stand, as I know for a fact that they will kick up an almighty fuss and end up trying their best to get money out of me. there's no chance I can bump start it due to where it is parked, so it wont be moving until the snow is at least thawed.

with..the above situation, is there any of it which means I will have to pay money? The way I see it is I've paid for a part and labour, and the part has failed within a month.

any advice?

[sorry for typos and lack of pound symbools, new keyboard and too chewed up to change it]

All parts under 12 months will come with a warranty, so you won't need to be paying for a replacement starter, also most parts warranties allow the labour to be claimed back also. This doesn't matter wether it is a pattern part or a original skoda part.

The garage wants to be claiming the labour cost and cost of the parts from whichever company they purchased it from.

I'd get under the car and check they actually replaced it with a new one as well.

Hi Guys, thanks for the answers. It is a new part, I saw the part myself, and I can see it fitted too (starter motor is in quite an easy to get to place)

It's a delco / delko remmy part by the way.

no matter how much in the right I am, this garage will try and screw me, so what combacks could they have? I know they will blame the car for a start.

IF they get really difficult, get it assessed by another garage, preferably a dealership and get a professional statement that the starter did fail due to it being faulty. Then ask the dealer to change it and send the bill to the difficult garage. If they refuse to pay, take them to the small claims court and recover costs.
