Hi

this article has inspired me to consider a cheap gaming http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df-hardware-introducing-the-digital-foundry-pc

I'll admit up front that I've not done a lot of reading on here so apologies if there are any threads that answer this already, but I very much doubt there are any with enough specifics in for me. Do tell me if I'm being too lazy though.

I'd happily more or less go along with exactly what that article suggests, except that I would like the PC to be under the TV, rather than at a desk with a monitor, so need to go for a nicer case basically (to keep the mrs "happy"). The problem is that I'm fairly constrained in terms of size, and so, when combined with my lack of knowledge about case/gfx card/motherboard sizes I'm worried I'm going to end up with components that won't fit together.

I would appreciate any advice that could be offered, around spec, specific products, or even just telling me whether I'm wasting my time considering this (or otherwise).

The space I have is around 390 x 390 x 145 (w x d x h in mm) and is open at one side and the back (if that's relevant for cooling). Looking round I can see a few cases that fit the height criteria but are slightly too wide - there's a chance I could shift things around to get plenty of width if the 390mm size above was a deal-breaker for anything, and depth isn't too much of a problem, it could poke out of the back a bit if needed.

I appreciate a case will cost more than the one in the article above. I've no set budget, but would probably like to aim for as close to £350-400 as poss for the unit itself, ignore the OS. I can go higher though so if you feel a slightly more expensive thing might be better then feel free to suggest it.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

I've been doing research into building an ultra compact gaming system based on MATX that has less volume than an ITX SUGO 05.

My Specs would be this case: CiT S011B Black Tower Case - 99 x 295 x 365 (WxHxD) (inspired from this http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18401933)

- Rip out rubbish supplied PSU & fit a Be Quiet 300W SFX or a Silverstone 450W SFX PSU depending on budget.
- Couple this with a good Z77 MATX Motherboard.
- 2 x HD7750 Graphics cards (Low-Profile ones have just become available) in crossfire will give you pretty good game performance.

Slap in some RAM, an Intel i5 Ivy and maybe a Big Shruiken Cooler with even an upgraded thicker 120mm fan for a dabble in overclocking and thats my idea of ultra compact.

It would work as a tower or desktop and still have room for a TV tuner card or sound card, a couple of Hard Drives and SSD's and a full size BluRay ROM.

If your seeking a more tighter budget, maybe wait a month or two for the AMD Trinity A10-5800K, slap it on an Aserock MATX FM2 Mobo and crossfire it with a low-profile Sapphire HD6670, should give great 720p performance.

Thanks for those replies.

CaneyJ your suggestion sounds good but I think it would be well above my intended budget, and not an awful lot more powerful (though I could be wrong!) due to using low-profile graphics cards, though that may well be my only option?

The silverstone case looks like but I'm not convinced the PSU would be anywhere near powerful enough for gaming?
