i mainly play rpg and fps. nothing competitive online, as im old and useless.
ive had a browse today and come across Venom head straps with a battery attached to them. are they any good or will i need to bite the bullet and get an elite strap?

Get prescription or non prescription lens protectors to save the plastic lenses.
i only use glasses for close up things like reading.
will i need to wear them with the headset?
where do i buy prescription lenses from?

You only need prescription lenses if you have short sight, or astigmatism. If you can see things clearly at 1.5 - 2m distance, then you should be ok.

KiwiDesign or BoboVR make the best straps for the Quest 3.

AS for your eyesight, try the headset first, you might not need prescription lenses.

In fact, that's my advice to you. Get the headset and try it out first. Use it for a couple of weeks before you rush out and buy any of the extra's. Like I know people who think the stock strap is perfectly fine and would never play VR for more than a hour or so. So all the battery strap addons and stuff would be wasted on them. We are only giving you advice based on our use of VR headsets.

Try it, come back with questions as you use it.

Ravenger and Mr.Cookie are old and useless :p and they seem to enjoy VR games, even competitive ones. Gaming in VR is a little different than the pancake gaming. It's just a matter of finding a good group to play with.

DCS word is free if you like flight sims. Well you get 2 planes a Su-5 and a p-51 trainer and one map. It can be a bit complex but good fun and my end up rather expensive if you like that sort of thing.

i have a laptop with
i7 10750
rtx 3060

The headset needs USB and HDMI as far as I’m aware.

The best way is to do PCVR is wireless, if you have a 5ghz or better router in the same room where you play VR.
You can use Quest Link or Steam Link for free. The best way is to use Virtual desktop which is a paid app on your Quest headset.

To watch movies you can either copy them onto your headset via a USB cable, or stream from a PC. To do that you'll need a movie watching program such as Big Screen (Free) Skybox or 4XVR.

You'll need a wired link from your Laptop to the Router for wireless though. You can use a long USBC cable (5m in length) to do wired PC VR but that seems to be a bit broken in the latest updates.

I recommend the 'i expect you to die' series - puzzle based sitting down. Good fun.
Super hot - even if you played on pc years ago this is still great on vr due to the simple gfx.
Into the radius 1 - loved this game. It is slightly better on PCVR but that's a choice to make.
PCVR - HL:Aylx if you're into HL and while I do have Virtual Desktop - you could get away with the free steam link. Maybe.

ive downloaded Skybox and a couple of games that LostCorpse recommended.
time to get familiar with things now.
