This site may be a bit too expert for the likes of me, but all I want to know is can I use a smart phone SIM in a tablet, and which tablet would you recommend? Or, could I cast or tether or use the phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot ( whatever that is ) or plug in the USB lead to watch films and sport on a laptop or tablet? Many thanks, and please remember my first computer was a Commodore 64 and I still think Paperboy as state of the art.

Depends on your contract / provider? How much are you looking to spend on a tablet?
I don't really do tablets so I'm unsure about which current ones are the best, but in order to put the SIM (assuming your provider allows this, I think pretty much all of them probably will in the UK at least, but would be best to check with them) then you would need to buy a tablet specifically with a SIM slot, a lot of them just have wifi and no SIM slot, however. The ones with a SIM slot are often quite a bit more expensive than the normal wifi model tablets from what I remember.
If you just want to set up a wifi hotspot on your phone, then as long as you can see that option on the phone to set it up, you should be fine to do that, and then just connect a wifi only tablet to the hotspot you create (you just connect to it like a normal wifi access point), and it is the similar with USB tethering (it is in the same settings section as setting up a portable hotspot to enable this, at least on my android phone. Whatever you are connecting your phone to, may have to support being able to USB tether connections, and I'm not sure if all tablets are fine doing this, or not).

If you want to watch movies then services like Netflix and Amazon now allow you to download movies / episodes to the device so you can watch when you don't have a signal.
