Hi guys, I'm after a little bit of advice please. I bought a Nikon D5100 (+ kit lense)a couple of years ago for travel and day trips etc and to learn a bit more about photography. Despite using it the wife and I have found it a bit too bulky to want to take it out every day especially when on holiday so we're in the market for something a little smaller as we'd often leave it behind in the hotel safe. I'd put ourselves very firmly in the casual user bracket so will be used for holidays, landscapes, etc. very little in the way of action or wildlife (maybe th occasional airshow or F1 day).

Been looking at mirrorless compact camera systems so after some advice on those please. Th two that I've read up about online are the Sony A6000 and Olympus OMD E-M10. Gotten to the stage where I'd like to try different lenses too, may bit just one additional one to the kit lense to begin with to get better at photography. I be been pretty happy with the images that the Nikon and kit lense gives on the whole but they seem to sometimes lack vibrancy or sharpness.

Budget is about £500.

I think the first question you need to ask yourself is whether you still want an interchangeable lens camera, it will always add bulk and weight. Their main advnatge is in being able to select lenses for dedicated purposes so you are going to end up wth a bag of lenses.
There are plenty of very high performing compact integrated cameras, have a look at the likes of the Panasonic LX100.

If you do want an interchangeable lens camera then I would look at either the m43 system Panasonic/Olympus) or Nikon 1. While the Sony's and Fji's are nice enough, their APS-C sized sensor is the same as what you have in your D5100 so the lenses sizes are much the same. If you want smaller lenses you need a smaller sensor.

The Nikon 1 camera have the best continuous autofocus and support Nikon F-mount lenses very well with an adapter. The M43 cameras are very mature and have a huge lens selection.

Thanks for the replies chaps, certainly a lot to think about. The LX100 does look very good but I think I'd like to grow into the camera and photography and my gut feeling is that an M4/3 CSC might be better.

...Just buy something cheap for your holiday snaps and keep the 5100 so you can 'grow into the camera and photography' as you put it.
