Advice for build planning

Greetings,

I'm looking at building a new rig around the i5- 12600k CPU as it looks like a really solid chip.
Retaining my current gtx 1080 GPU.

I run ultrawide 1440. Use is 95% gaming, 5% image processing in Gimp.

I'm really out-of-touch so I would welcome some advice on the following before I start planning a build:
- DDR5 or DDR4. I want to future-proof, so I'm drawn to DDR5 but I'm interested in opinions on this and whether the large cost difference is worthwhile.
- Socket. The i5-12600k is an LGA 1700 socket - does that socket go by another name as I have problems finding MOBOs with LGA 1700.
- Water cooling. My current rig is air cooled. Water cooled as a complete unknown for me. Any basic pointers on where to start here would be appreciated.

Hi.

DDR5 has virtually 0 impact on gaming performance and is not worth the cost check out some review's DDR4 is pr9bablly a wiser choice.

Skt 1700 motherboards You either want a b660 or z690 the latter allowing you to overclock the k cpu and having slightly more features.

Water cooling most get an all in one soloution and size depending on your case dimensions , there not to difficult to fit. The 12600k is not so difficult to cool .

Do you have a budget?

Thanks for your advice and I'm pleased that DDR4 remains a good option. That will keep the cost down or allow me to divert money to other components.

On budget, that's a good question. I keep flipping between cannabalising my existing rig for parts (PSU, case, etc) and building a totally new desktop. For sure I will reuse my 1080 gpu, so I won't need to spend on that just yet.
Assuming a totally new build (+existing GPU) I was hoping to get somewhere near the £1500 range. If justified to considerably increase performance or longevity then I can go higher, but then I reach levels of uneasy questions from the other half, so safer to aim for £1500.

Do you anticipate that £1500 would be a reasonable budget for a rig? No peripherals or screen needed btw.

I would reuse your 1080 and eait till prices drop further.

Below is a build which can be made a decent bit cheaper if you go air cooling and a b660 motherboard. £100 saved.

Z690 motherboard with Wi-Fi , pcie4 m2 drive and gone 850w psu which will allow you to upgrade your gpu to a 3090.

Watercooler may need a skt 1700 bracket as most dont come with one for Alderlake cpu

How would your rig stack against that? Maybe the cooling I chose is overkill? Not sure if the 3600mhz would be perceptibly better than 3200mhz either...

The 2 systems compared will perform virtually the same maybe slightly lower temps due to the cooling .

For me your wasting an extra £200 on a fancy water cooling set up where the money could be put towards a new gpu or 12700k. Theres nothing wrong with having a fancy set up if your prepared to pay but it won't do much for performance.

The Asus motherboard is slightly better than the MSI and a good choice but the m2 drive is slower than the above.
