Hi

I'm building with lots of help from my bro a new pc to replace my rather old HP pavilion celeron laptop (n5452).

I have on the list so far
Asus sabertooth
i7 950
Arctic Cooling Freezer 13
Coolermaster HAF X case

I would like to add a ssd for the system and another hdd for storage.

I'm a little confused on Memory that will be fine with the motherboard. I downloaded the manual and read through the list of ram I can fit but I seem to find it hard to locate them plus all this 8.8.8.24 numbers and 1600 or 1800 has me well and truely confused.
What is a good 6GB match for the motherboard?

The other item is a PSU and I thought the Corsair AX750 would be a good choice for long term reliability and some flex for a better GPU when needed.
Are these good PSU's?

I have no idea on what GPU i would like. Nivida or ATI, just so many to pick and I'm going around and around looking at them.

Have to honest and say I can't wait to see the end of this laptop with its 256 ram as it drives me mad just booting up. 15 mins just to see the windows screen lol.

I hope someone can help me as I've already found this site to be great for info in my hour of need.

Hi there, may I ask what you will be using the PC for?

Also, may I ask what your total budget it?

Finally, what kit do you need to be included with the budget? Obviously the entire tower and operating system, but will you be needing a monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers etc. ?

The first thing I would suggest is that unless you plan to run three graphics cards, then go for the brand new Sandy Bridge CPUs/motherboards - instead of the older X58/ i7 950. These new chips are a good deal faster and can be cheaper, here is a full in-depth review.

This is how the new i5 2500K CPU compares to the more expensive i7 950 in a range of tasks.

Thanks for the reply.

I've no budget as such so cost is not an issue.
I need the whole kit from monitor to keyboard as I'm starting fresh from my laptop.
I do have a plasma tv I could connect to but would like that for just my old movies. If I did use it I could send the signal via remote so nothing has to be plugged into the tv from the computer.
I'm not sure on the Sandybridge stuff yet. Early days so would like to stick to the old tried and tested stuff.
Its going to be used for my accounts to spending a happy hour or two playing some relaxing stuff. Might be able to play Quake again with 3Zb :D.

If this system last as long as this old laptop I will be happy.
Oh and I don't want to overclock this either. Just want a good steady eddy that is good for what ever I wish to do.

Thanks RJC.

Is there any difference on PSU's when they cost say double of the antec or do all PSU's have the same safety level performance.
Am I being to fussy with the Corsair AX750.

The Antec gets good reviews and they have dropped the price to make it more competitive.

The Corsair AX is the higher efficiency range, weather the user would notice any difference, I can't say.

650w would be fine and you can add another card in the future if needed.

Thanks again for the info.

I was just about to order all this and then thought I would double check on everything and found out the sabertooth will have problems with the ssd as system drive. Seems to be something to do with TRIM.
Also the SATA 6Gb/s don't run at the max speed.
I really want the ssd and the extra 6Gb/s and thats a blow so its back to the drawing board.
Perhaps I should look at the new Sandybridge stuff after all before jumping in.

Wish I was 30 years younger!! my old head works very slowly like my celeron :)
